Coffee Makes My Fingers Twitch...

That's a great piece on "where my ideas come from". As a writer, I get asked that fairly regularly, and till now my answer has been "everywhere". I should get that printed on index cards and hand it out next time.
I agree. I wonder if other writers ask that question of each other? I can't see myself asking that of any other writer personally, I'd be more interested in how they're able to translate all those distractions into something workable... is it just Red Bull, or is there something else too?

I don't ask other writers because I know the answer could be as blindingly obscure to them as some of my idea origins are to me. Why did I make that character a snowboarder? Damned if I can remember.

Discipline is the key for me. With a day job and life chores, I don't have the luxury of waiting till the muse shits on my head. You just have to have the discipline to sit down despite distractions and pound away. I'm working on the "discipline despite distractions" today. So far, distractions are winning.

Distractions have the title 10 years running over here.
