How Far Has the Apple Fallen?

The fact is, both state and steeple deal with people, and in many cases they are the same people. To separate these into several separate facets, and think that one part of their life has no relevance on the other parts is to be as ignorant of reality as to say the earth is flat.

So true.

I agree with what your father says about free will, also. It is inherent in free will that to have it means you will deal with the consequences of your free will actions for better or worse. Otherwise, it is not free will. You cannot legislate morality.

Your Dad writes well, Toe-Knee.

I think the essence of the discussion comes down to relaxed christians expect trouble to be generated by less acceptable life styles (to them). The trouble often comes from their more hard line christian fellows which results in a self fulfilling prophecy.

A little less meddling would certainly improve the world for the rest of us.

i think it's really cool that you can converse in such a manner with your dad on subjects like this, Toe-Knee :)

on the history of marriage - i read up a bit on it a little while ago - this may be of interest - the concept of marriage in history was not conceived in religion - according to the Greeks and Romans, it was meant to be a civil institution - marriage was not appropriated by the church as a religious ceremony and sacrament until the 12th century - in fact most marriages before then were simply done in a family setting without any blessing by the church

personally, i think what we're talking about with gay marriages is their right to be in a civil marriage - which should never have been revoked/denied in the first place - this is a civil rights issue, make no bones about it - because in the US, along with marriage comes with all the legal recognition and such, right - because of separation of church and state, the term marriage, in this case should have solely secular connotations - or should have...

the fact that it's being seen as a religious/moral issue in order to deny a certain subset of Americans their rights is despicable

I can;t really add any more here than these other intelligent VOXERS have. I know I am usually much more verbose, especially on this subjectr, but I think my head cold has affected my thought process....

TK,

I agree with Dad, who said that "I highly doubt that the church itself is actively involved in an overthrow campaign".

Unless clergy are forced to commit “same-sex marriage” ceremonies, they will fall short of not seeking to "overthrow" them, rather instead teaching that they are wrong in the eyes of God.

In the final analyses, in the absence of same sex marriage, people may have the right to chose (be marriage to the opposite sex or not).

“Marriage” (possibly defined as a union of persons) can be both a legal and a non-legal entity. If a same-sex couple really loved ea. then why do they need a legal contract?

The histrionic character of many homosexuals will not allow them to stop making a public spectacles of themselves to push agendas whenever possible (case- marriage, eHarmony, Pride parades, etc.).

Then why does anyone need a contract Jim? Do you think black people are prone to stealing?

Do you think that women shouldn't have marched for the right to vote? Black people should still be in the back of busses?

Oppressed people act out. Like abused children do.

Histerionics like Ministers begging for cash every Sunday or the Pope dressing up like a Fairy God Mother and carrying little Bo Peeps stick through the castle? How about beauty pageants? Or fighting to keep books about boy penguins away from children?

Churches are totally involved in actively overthrowing laws. They donate almost 100% of the money used to overturn Gay rights. They openly solicit funds from their followers tax free and then donate it. They write the scripts used in the advertisements also.

Marriage was invented by the Government and the Church hijacked it when they were trying to overthrow the Government in Italy, France, and England. The Church of England was founded because the Pope wouldn't divorce Henry the Eighth so he could fuck Anne Bolien guilt free. That's the Protestant branch of the Christian Church.

The assumption that being Gay is immoral is totally contingent on your perception of God being the correct one. But if mine is correct then it is many other people that are immoral. The difference is that my God doesn't condemn or hate or destroy. Mine just loves, and helps, and cares. So I'm quite comfortable knowing mine and I wish everybody the same peace of mind that I have. I would also believe then that your opinions are more important than mine.

I'm glad that you and your dad can talk Toe-knee. My dad was a lifelong Military Guy and a Roman Catholic. When they learned I was gay they left the Church and the Military because they learned that they had been mistaken all those years because of what they were taught. I taught them otherwise and I never let them down. My parents left their estate to me and I divided it 100 percent evenly between all my brothers and sisters. Several of them, given the same choice may have made a different one. That's why they left it to me. Integrity, honesty, and I actually want everybody to have the same share in the world that I wish for myself. Nothing more but certainly nothing less.

Thanks for posting this. Everybody isn't a bigot just because they see things differently than I do. But many are and dialogues like this help put an end to much of it.

agree with Dancing Bear ...
and what a great story, yours.
my friends with Military parents, at the time we came out (I'm talking the 70s here, in South America, imagine inquisition government....not a good time to be gay or come out as one) did not have your same luck.
As a matter of fact I have seen families destroyed because of the Catolic Church influence in every day life, leave alone influence in govrnments...

Is a great thing you can talk to your dad, I have the same luck in this one:
I was forced to talk to my dad about my being gay because we were involved in some (ewww ...we were young) weird story and an ex girlfriend of mine called my parents, telling them some story involving some robbery and giving them detailed info about the girl who was my partner....

When talking to my dad then, his words were: if your choice is to make your life beside a woman, feel free to do so, but do it honestly. Then I will give you my full support. (he also gave me a huge lecture about the fact that, if instead of him my mum picked up the phone, she would have had a heart attack and how I should therefore control where my life was going)

I talk to my dad often, maybe even more often now that we live so far away, than when we were in the same city..
is a great thing to be able to communicate with them.. :)
